Judging by my website statistics and recent email correspondence from readers of my it has become apparent that the Lens Correction Profiles that I had made available are a lot more popular than I expected. Unfortunately, time was tight when I first published the Feature Review, which meant that I was only able to build profiles for use with raw images, and even then for only some of the Canon lenses I own. So, given their popularity and currently restricted availability from Adobe’s own lens profile server, I have decided to finish the job and make all of my lens profiles available from this website. However, before downloading them it might be worth spending a few moments reading about how lens profiles are created.

To create the lens profiles for use with Lightroom 3 and Camera Raw 6.1 I use the Adobe Lens Profile Creator application. This application characterises three common types of lens aberrations, namely geometric distortion, lateral chromatic aberration, and vignetting. The actual process of creating the lens correction profiles is broken down into two stages. The first involves taking multiple photographs of a calibration target from slightly different lateral positions and angles.

The procedure for setting up the target, the camera, etc is fully described in the documents Adobe provide with the Lens Profile Creator application, so I won’t go into it here. Typically, for a telephoto zoom lens I aim to get between 8 and 12 calibration sets. Adobe suggest that each set can comprise a minimum of 3 images, but I find it much better to capture the recommended 9 images per set.

When capturing images of the target it’s also important to move the camera slightly left and right of centre as well as tilting it up and down. Again, the documentation provided by Adobe describes the pattern of camera movements. Also, the calibration series for a zoom lens should cover the full range of marked focal lengths at various focus distances and apertures. The key point being, the more calibration sets recorded in the series the better the quality of the final lens profile. S flash neptune lte2 drivers for mac. With 12 sets, each containing 9 images we end up with 108 images. This might seem like a lot, but for some zoom lenses it’s easy to end up with double that number. Needless to say, it is a time consuming procedure that requires plenty of space, especially for long telephotos, and good even illumination.

The illumination level does not need to be constant, but it does need to be fairly even. The image in figure 1 below shows where I’ve set the target up just outside of my garage and used natural light (slight overcast sky) to illuminate the target. With a 400mm lens I can be 20 metres or more from the target, thus capturing the characteristics of the lens when at or near at the infinity setting. It also keeps my neighbours humoured. Figure 1 – Adobe Lens Calibration Target Ideally, the camera should be set up to capture raw images as these will allow you to create lens profiles for both raw and JPEG/TIFF images.

If the captured images of the calibration target are JPEGs the final lens profile for the lens being calibrated cannot be used with raw images. The Lens Profile Creator application can only import DNG, JPEG or TIFF images. Therefore, when all of the images have been captured they must be converted to the desired file format. Converting to DNG is best done via Adobe’s own DNG Converter application, which can be downloaded from their website or using Camera Raw. It’s also possible to use Lightroom, but I think it is much too time consuming to go down that path. When the images making up the calibration sets are all converted it is then time for the second stage of the process.

The second stage of creating lens correction profiles begins when you import the DNG or JPEG calibration images into the Lens Profile Creator application. Again, the procedure for using the application is well documented. However, things to keep in mind when using it are: correctly identifying the calibration target used, accurate measurement of the squares, and most importantly – don’t rush. The application is fairly good at error detection, but it’s usually only after it has run through a calibration set when it tells you that something was wrong.

So, keep an eye on the image panel on the left side of the application window. After each calibration set has been analysed by the application you’ll be given the option to add the data to a new profile or append it to an existing profile. So, there you have it, creating lens profiles is a fairly straightforward, albeit time consuming. As can be seen in figures 2 and 3 below, putting the profiles to use is fairly straightforward in Lightroom and Photoshop CS5.

However, be careful that you don’t select a raw profile (denoted by raw in profile name) when using the Lens Correction filter in Photoshop. If you do so, the results, particularly the vignette model will tend to overcorrect, thus causing over bright corners.

Figure 2 – Lightroom 3 Lens Corrections As mentioned above, Photoshop CS5 is currently the only method by which lens profiles can be downloaded from the Adobe servers. Profiles downloaded from Adobe will be denoted by a globe icon and those on your hard disk by a Home icon. Figure 3 – Photoshop CS5 Lens Correction Filter Now after that slight detour it’s back to the lens profiles I mentioned at the beginning. The profiles were all created from images captured on a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, so they’re compatible with all of Canon’s full-frame, APS-H and APS-C type DSLRs. In total there are eighteen profiles. Nine for raw images and another nine for JPEG/TIFF images.

The lenses covered are:. Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L.

Canon EF70-200mm f2.8L IS USM. Canon EF70-200mm f2.8L IS USM with 1.4X Extender. Canon EF70-200mm f2.8L IS USM with 2X Extender.

Canon EF100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM. Canon EF100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM with 1.4x Extender. Canon EF100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM with 2X Extender. Canon EF400 f/5.6 USM. Canon EF400 f/5.6 USM with 1.4X Extender The profile for the TS-E24mm Tilt Shift was created with the lens set to zero tilt/shift. However, limited testing indicates that it’s still useable up a a degree or two of tilt and/or shift. Obviously, the accuracy of the geometric distortion and vignette correction models is somewhat compromised when the lens is in either tilt or shift positions.

Adobe Lens Profiles

So, don’t expect miracles. I have already submitted above profiles to Adobe and they’re all available from their lens profile server. However, the server is currently only accessible to folk with Photoshop CS5. That being said, there have been comments from Adobe staff to suggest that this may change sometime in the relatively near future. We can but hope. In the meantime, my lens profiles are contained in this.

The Lightroom CC ecosystem has been updated today, with updates for the Windows (1.3), Mac (1.3), iOS (3.2) and Android (3.4) apps. (.) Of course there’s new / support, but there’s some big new features too: New Profiles (All Versions) Since version 3, Lightroom has offered a number of profiles to emulate different in-camera picture styles, but they were hidden away in the Camera Calibration panel so most people didn’t know they existed, and they weren’t available in Lightroom CC. In the April 2018 Lightroom releases, these profiles have become first-class citizens, and the concept has been greatly expanded. In addition to the existing camera matching profiles, there’s now a whole set of new Adobe profiles for different subjects, and a wide range of creative profiles to give your photos a specific “look”. These profiles are now available across the entire Lightroom and Camera Raw ecosystem. Changes to Presets (Windows/Mac) Lightroom CC desktop now accepts the new.xmp format presets as well as.lrtemplate format presets.

Filter by Sync Status (Windows/Mac) You can now filter your photos by their sync status, to find those that are currently syncing, or those that only have smart previews available in the cloud. Store Originals on NAS (Windows/Mac) You can now select your NAS as the custom location for original photos.

This is particularly useful when migrating from Lightroom Classic, if you don’t have a spare external hard drive available. Left Handed Editing for iPad (iOS) Tap the LR icon (top-left of Organize view) and then go to General preferences Left Handed Editing to move the panels to the left. New Camera Support (All Versions) When a new camera is released, standardized formats such as JPEG, TIFF and DNG are supported immediately.

Proprietary raw file formats are not standardized, so they must be individually added in a Lightroom release. Most cameras are supported within 2-3 months of their release.

Raw file format support has been added in this release for:. Canon EOS 1500D (EOS Rebel T7/EOS Kiss X90/EOS 2000D). Canon 3000D (EOS Rebel T100/EOS 4000D). Canon EOS M50 (EOS Kiss M). Panasonic LUMIX DC-GX9 (DC-GX7MK3). Panasonic LUMIX ZS200 (DC-TX2/DC-TZ200/DC-TZ202/DC-TZ220/DC-ZS220).

New Lens Profiles (All Versions) Many compact and mirrorless cameras have built-in lens profiles, but other cameras use lens profiles to correct for lens defects such as barrel/pincushion distortion and vignetting. New profiles are added with each Lightroom release. Click here for the. How do I update? To update, go to Help menu Updates or click the Update button in the CC app. The update servers take a while to push the updates around the world, to avoid crashing the servers. You can also open the Creative Cloud app, click the icon (top right) and select Check for Updates to give it a nudge.

I’m glad that Adobe finally added an option for left-handed editing. It is very helpful for lefties like me to have the editing tools on the left side. However, this option does NOT flip the star rating and pick/reject quick select swiping shortcuts. This is unfortunate because quickly culling photos is one of the main benefits of using Lightroom CC on an iPad, and it is awkward and slower for left-handed users to move their left hand to the right side of the screen to swipe the flag status up or down. It would greatly help most left-handed users if the pick/select flag selection shortcut was also moved to the left-side of the screen when the left-handed option is selected. Excited to see the frequent flow of updates.

Tried CC but went back to classic. Love the modern interface and everything being in sync. While many will never be happy until their is full feature parity with classic but for me just a few things holding me back. No photo compare features, no face detection, limited search versus classic, doesn’t support plugins such as syncing with SmugMug, no keyword hierarchy, limited meta options compared to classic. While there are many other differences, hoping those features aren’t too far away as would love to go back full speed into the new Lightroom and as others do I imagine the community will grow for it, since most all literature is for Classic still.
