That will provide more power to the external drive. Many external USB drives do not work right unless they have the right amount of power. The older the drive gets, that can become a problem. Bus driven drives need lots of power especially when they're writing. Also keep in mind that your external drive will not show up on the desktop unless a disk is inserted - but I assume you already know that?

Drivers are allays the responsibility of the device Manufacturer. They can choose not to write for 'new' OS's at any time (obsolescence-forward compatibility). Apple included many OS X drivers available from manufacturers however, up until recently when they stopped including built in optical drives completely, optical drive extensions (aka drivers) were for those OEM drives Apple used in builds. It made sense for Apple to include a multitude of printer/image drivers as those peripherals are something a user is expected to obtain from a 3rd party. With the exception of MBA's, optical drives were never part of that expectation. Further this is a software not a hardware issue.

Unfortunately, lots of people reported this when they upgraded. I had the same problem with my iMac, actually. The drive worked on a previous version of OSX but after upgrading to Yosemite, it wasn't recognized. No drivers were needed, no messing around with the OS.

I followed someone else's suggestion to plug in a USB hub and miraculously the drive appears and functions perfectly. There are lots of people out there telling folks that it's the drive or drivers. This is the only solution I've personally seen work and seen reported by other users as working.
